Bimodal Neuromodulation: An Exciting New Direction in Tinnitus Support

Tinnitus research has entered an exciting new era, thanks to growing evidence for a treatment approach called bimodal neuromodulation. This innovative therapy is designed to target the neural activity associated with tinnitus by changing how the brain responds to sound.


What Is Bimodal Neuromodulation?

Bimodal neuromodulation combines sound stimulation (through headphones) with gentle stimulation of another sensory pathway, such as touch via the tongue or skin. The goal is to help “retune” overactive and overly synchronized brain circuits that are believed to contribute to tinnitus.

What Does the Research Show?

Over the past several years, studies have shown promising results:

  • Foundational research demonstrated that pairing sound with somatosensory stimulation can influence abnormal brain activity linked to tinnitus, leading to reduced symptoms in both animal models and humans (Marks et al., 2018). 
  • Large randomized clinical trials have since shown that targeted bimodal stimulation can lead to clinically meaningful reductions in tinnitus severity, with improvements persisting beyond the treatment period (Jones et al., 2023). 
  • More recent trials combining sound with tongue stimulation have reported symptom improvement in many participants, with benefits maintained following treatment and a favourable safety profile (Boedts et al., 2024). 

Bimodal neuromodulation is an emerging, evidence-supported approach that may help reduce tinnitus symptoms and their impact on daily life.

Looking Ahead
