Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hearing test?

A diagnostic hearing test is an assessment by an audiologist (a licensed hearing health care professional trained to test, diagnose and treat hearing loss) using an audiometer. A hearing test is a 30 to 60-minute evaluation to determine the degree and type of hearing loss. Did you know - it is scientifically proven that having hearing loss addressed can significantly improve a person’s quality of life in many ways!

Do I need a hearing test?

If you experience decreased hearing or a ringing sound (tinnitus) in one or both ears, it is recommended you have your hearing tested by an audiologist. It is also suggested to have your hearing tested regularly if you work or have worked in a noisy environment, or having a family history of hearing loss. A hearing test may be required if you are seeing an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for a hearing or inner ear-related issue.

How often should I have my hearing tested?

Based on American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA) guidelines, healthy adults between 18-40 years of age should have their hearing tested every three to five years, even if they do not notice any changes in their hearing. If you experience a sudden drop in your hearing, contact your audiologist immediately and present to your nearest emergency department for high-dose oral steroids.

Are hearing tests covered by insurance?

Yes, annual audiograms are covered by most third-party insurance companies. A receipt will be provided at the end of your evaluation for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

What can I expect at my appointment?

We are following Public Health protocols to do our part in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and to ensure the utmost safety for both staff and our patients. All patients are screened for COVID-19 symptoms or exposures prior to their appointment, and masks are worn by both the patient and staff during the evaluation.

If you are scheduled for an initial hearing assessment, tinnitus consultation, or hearing aid fitting, we ask you arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment. If applicable, bring your VAC “K” number or WCB claim information. Patients are permitted to have one support person or family member accompany them.

If you have scheduled an appointment for earwax removal, please use mineral or olive oil drops in the impacted ear (2 drops/mls, twice a day) for 14 days before your appointment. You can use oil in the ears even if you have a small hole in the eardrum (perforation).

You will be greeted by our lovely client care manager, Kari, who will be there to assist you from the beginning to the end of your visit. Your evaluation will be completed by our licensed hearing health expert, Shayna, providing guidance during your test and thoroughly explaining all treatment options that best suit you.
